SB 279 & HB 6167: Expanding scope of practice is a dangerous risk with proven drawbacks.

MiRadiologists have valid concerns about current legislation that proposes to expand the scope of practice for nurse practitioners (NPs). This legislation would allow NPs to provide care that physicians spend years training to become qualified to give patients. By forgoing that essential training and expertise, Senate Bill 279 and House Bill 6167 puts every citizen in Michigan at risk by compromising standards of care and patient safety.

This legislation is detrimental to the current physician-led team in radiology that is so critical to ensuring safe medical practice.

HB 4399 & SB 268: A Direct Threat to Patient Safety in Radiology

HB 4399 and SB 268 are dangerous pieces of legislation that seek to expand the scope of practice for non-physician providers—specifically nurse practitioners—granting them the authority to interpret and manage diagnostic imaging studies without the direct oversight of a radiologist. This is not about teamwork. It's about replacing physician expertise with less training and less accountability.

Radiologists complete over a decade of specialized medical education, including medical school, residency, and often fellowship training, to ensure the highest standards of image interpretation, diagnosis, and patient care. HB 4399 & SB 268 undermine that standard by allowing individuals without this rigorous training to perform tasks traditionally—and safely—done by radiologists.

Radiology is not just about reading images. It’s about integrating clinical context, understanding complex pathology, and making life-altering decisions based on nuanced findings. Misinterpretations can lead to delayed diagnoses, unnecessary treatments, or missed critical findings.
We support collaborative care. But HB 4399 is not collaboration—it is substitution.

Protect Michigan patients. Oppose HB 4399 & SB 268.
